What Do You Think About The Christ?
As we enter Holy Week with a renewed focus to walk again with Jesus through the week that culminated with His death, burial, and resurrection, may our Father pour out His grace upon us so that we see the height and depth and length and breadth of our Triune God's love for His own glory and for His people! May we glory all week long in the truth that because Jesus was forsaken on the cross, those whose faith is in Him will never be! We plan to gather to worship our Lord and Savior on Good Friday at 6pm and with two different services on Resurrection Sunday at 8:30am and10:45am.
One book I'll be reading from Palm Sunday to Resurrection Sunday is John Stott's The Cross of Christ. He puts Jesus' sufficient, substitutionary death on the cross at the center of the gospel in ways that will deepen your love for God and fill your mouth with praise! He writes "It was by His [Jesus] death that He wished above all else to be remembered. There is then, it is safe to say, no Christianity without the cross. If the cross is not central to our religion, ours is not the religion of Jesus." [p68]
The Gospel Coalition's free resource The Final Week of Jesus helps us keep the cross central this week. Starting on Palm Sunday, each day has a short video along with Scripture readings harmonizing Jesus' days leading to Calvary and the empty tomb. The picture below from BibleGateway is also a helpful timeline that visualizes Holy Week. May the Father through the Holy Spirit give us eyes to see our Savior this week!
We read in Matthew 22.41-42a: Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, saying, “What do you think about the Christ?..." That is the all-important question for us. Not only this week, but every day of our lives because how we answer it impacts everything. We believe Jesus is the Second Adam, whose perfect life fulfilled the law and whose substitutionary death on the cross exhausted God's judgment against His people's record of debt that stood against us! Jesus' resurrection from the dead guarantees the resurrection of all those who are alive in Him! Our names are graven on His hand and written on His heart! Jesus is the reigning King and the returning Lord of all! We believe, and may this Holy Week help our unbelief!
