Update from Mexico

Posted by MJ Suriano on

The following is an update from MJ Suriano, serving with Youth With A Mission's medical ships ministry.

Our ministry here in Mexico is basically meant to support the work of the YWAM base that serves the community long-term. This has led us to get involved in an incredibly large variety of ministries! Two of the main ministries we'll be involved in here are Bible distribution and street evangelism—seems strange for a team with a bunch of nurses, I realize. However, these are ministries with such ample opportunity for creativity and educating people that we can use our skills. We're also doing some orphanage ministry and working with a poor community to provide some basic medical care/education to help meet their needs. We're also doing some orphanage ministry and working with a poor community to provide some basic medical care/education to help meet their needs. We are also supporting a young, traveling pastor and a church in an itty bitty town called Amardillo, where we help with the kids' ministries, telling Bible stories and testimonies, and offering encouragement to the 4-10 adults which make up the church there. This week is particularly exciting for us, as it's Holy Week, which Mexicans take very seriously. It's a great opportunity to share the gospel and to celebrate the resurrection with our brothers and sisters here!

The biggest prayer requests really involve health and language. I and one of our team leaders have been sick for about the past week or so; recovery has been slow and ministry off the table. Our team is pretty limited when it comes to Spanish, with three of us speaking little bits, but sharing the gospel is much easier to do when you can speak the language! Please pray that we are able to regain our strength (we have to walk a lot for ministry) and that our language would be enough to communicate God's love. One other thing is just a constant prayer for safety, especially as we have an all female team plus a family with two small boys. I've yet to feel really unsafe, but we do walk a lot, and crosswalks and seat belts aren't really a thing here.

Thank you for your prayers! Christ is risen!
